COMPOST WORMS:Compost worm pack

Our compost worms consist of a mix of up to 5 species. They are Tigers - Eisenia Fetida, Blues - Perionix Excavatus/Spenceralia, Reds - Eisenia Andrei, African Night Crawlers - Eudrilus Eugenia and Gardeners Friend or Cod Worms - Amynthus Sp.

We are the only worm farm in Australia that include African Night Crawlers and Gardeners Friend Worms in the compost worm mix.

TIGERS AND REDS

These 2 worm species are the most commonly used worms for composting in the world. They are generally good at all aspects of vermiculture. They breed quickly (1 worm will produce 9 worms per week under ideal conditions), they eat virtually all dead organic matter that they can fit in their mouths, they make reasonable fishing bait and they survive well under both hot and cold conditions, although the tigers and reds will slow their breeding in bedding temperatures over 25 degrees C. These are the ideal allrounder worms. On the downside, they don't grow much over 50mm long.

INDIAN BLUES/BLUEYS

Also known as Spenceralia, an Australian native, this worm species is the fastest breeding worm in general composting use (1 worm will produce 18 worms per week under ideal conditions). This worm also eats faster than any other worm we have come across. If you want to convert as much organic waste into worm compost in as short a time as possible, then you can't beat this worm. On the downside this worm prefers warmer climates and is likely to crawl from its bedding if conditions are not right for it. The Indians can grow up to 150mm long. After talking to some fisho's we now understand that the Indians make quite good fishing bait, being very active on the hook and very attractive to native fish.

 THE AFRICAN NIGHT CRAWLER

The African Night Crawlers are a very large worm and are ideal for consuming large quantities of organic waste material. They are also a top notch fishing worm. These worms are also called "Giant Tropical Compost Worms". This worm will grow up to 180mm long. These worms will breed at a good rate (1 worm will produce 6 worms per week under ideal conditions). On the downside this worm has a tendancy to crawl away at night (hence its name), prefers warmer climates and is susceptible to a disease caused by various soil moulds.

Gardeners Friend Worm

THE GARDENERS FRIEND OR COD WORM

The Gardeners Friend or Cod worms are even larger than the Africans and are the best soil structure builders. This worm is a true earthworm, prefering to live in soil rather than compost.

We have been extremely impressed with the ability of this worm to build wonderful soil structure creating a truly aggregated soil. These worms appear to prefer to eat the worm cast produced by the compost worms. They then take this worm cast and deposit it along the tunnels that they make, deeper within the soil profile. The soil they build is like swiss cheese. Full of well defined tunnels zig-zagging underground, lined with nutrient rich worm cast. These tunnels are the ideal pathways for plant roots to follow as well as allowing water to percolate through, allowing for thorough wetting of the soil profile. The Gardeners Friend or Cod worms are probably also the best fishing worm in Australia being extremely lively and very tough on the hook. (A couple of Gardeners Friend or Cod worms pictured on the right). On the downside these worms are slow to multiply and are difficult to breed.

BACK TO INFO ON OUR COMPOST WORMS:

For small scale worm farms like the "Reln Worm Farm", "Can-O-Worms" or "Tumbleweed Worm Farm", we recommend that initial stocking rates should be 1000 worms per member of the household. So if you have 4 members in your household, your worm farm would work best if your ordered 4000 worms. Smaller numbers of worms will still work, but will be much slower to start off.

We now sell our worms in lots of 1000, 2000 and 4000 worms.

We have two types of packs for our compost worms. They are the premium Bag O Worms which have large mature worms. And the Worm Bombs which are a budget pack containing baby worms and eggs.

We supply a "Helpful hints for keeping compost worms" information sheet with every order.

All of our worms are sustainably bred utilising waste product from the sugar industry as a food source. Our worms are bred in a climate controlled environment, enabling us to produce worms all year round.

Compost worm boxWorms that are shipped in bulk quantities are packaged in woven bags with a special bedding material. The bags are then placed into cardboard boxes, sealed and sent via Australia Post regular mail. We can deliver to anywhere within Australia.

We guarantee the safe delivery of our worms and will replace them free of charge should they not arrive in good condition.

Minimum order quantities are 1000 worms.

CAN O WORMS WORM FARMS WITH COMPOST WORMS:

We are now stocking Australia's most popular worm farm for the home user. These worm farms are very clever in their design. They allow for the conversion of most household organic waste in a very efficient and compact system.

We sell these worm farms as a package with either 1000, 2000 or 4000 compost worms. These worm farm packages are the most cost effective way to get into recycling your organic wastes with worms.

GARDEN BED WORM FARM WITH COMPOST WORMS:

Garden Bed Worm Farm 2This idea is an original for Kookaburra Worm Farms. George developed the idea of placing a worm farm insitu into the garden bed whilst experimenting on our Natureponics products. The insitu worm farm worked so well that we have decided to add it to our product list as a stand alone product.

This worm farm has many small holes in its base to allow the worms to go down into the garden bed to deposit their worm cast and then return to the worm farm for more food.

The advantages of incorporating a worm farm within a garden bed are significant:

Firstly you dramatically increase the waste recycling capacity of your worm farm. The effective area of your worm farm now increases from the worm farm size to the actual size of your garden bed. This could be up to a ten fold increase in capacity. The worms will breed up in numbers to fill the volume of the garden bed. The only restriction to their numbers will be the amount of scraps you feed to them (they can never overbreed as they have a natural mechanism to stop breeding when overcrowded). What this means is that you can recycle up to ten times the amount of scraps over a conventional worm farm of the same size.

Garden Bed Worm FarmSecondly you no longer need to have the extra work of removing the worm cast from your farm and manually incorporating it into your garden bed. The worms now do this work for you. The worms will come up and down through the holes in the base of the worm farm. The worms will come into the worm farm to eat the scraps, then they will leave the worm farm and spread their cast throughout the garden bed for you. All you have to do is keep feeding them the scraps directly into the worm farm.

Thirdly you now have a worm farm that is buffered from the weather. If the sun is too strong and heats up the worm farm during the day, the worms will escape into the soil, but they will return as soon as the sun sets. If it is very cold the worms will also escape the worm farm into the warmer soil and come back up for a feed when the weather warms up a bit.

Don't worry about the worms escaping into the soil and not returning. The worms will always return to a plentiful source of food, shelter and moisture.

Compost worm pack

The size of these worm farms is 570mm long x 400mm wide x 200mm deep.

We sell these worm farms as a package with either 1000 or 4000 compost worms. These worm farm packages are the most cost effective way to get into recycling your organic wastes with worms.

NOTE! We are the only worm farm in Australia that includes the ideal worm, in our compost worm mix, for this application. This is the Gardeners Friend worm (formerly called the Snake Worm).

THE LITTLE ROTTER - GARDEN BED WORM FARMS WITH A WORM BOMB:Handy size garden bed worm farm

Many people have been asking for a smaller sized, more economical way to get worms into their gardens and to recycle their organic waste.

Well here it is!!! Our Little Rotter garden bed worm farm is now available.

These little worm farms work on the same principle as the normal sized Garden Bed Worm Farms, ie: they have holes in the base to allow the worms to move into and back from your garden. They measure 220mm square x 310mm tall.

This little beauty has a flip top lid that secures down tightly. It is small and affordable enough to place all over your garden. It comes complete with a worm bomb (which will hatch out a thousand worms). All you need to do after setting them up is keep them fed and moist and the worms will get to work improving your soil and turning your waste into fertile worm casts to keep your plants healthy and happy.

Ideal for doggy poo and kitty litter.

These worm farms come in single, double and triple packs. To order just click here!

WORM CASTS: Mountain of worm cast
We also supply premium quality worm casts.

Our worm casts are high in natural minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, silica, calcium, magnesium, manganese, boron, molybdenum, zinc etc., however the main benefit to be derived from worm casts is the microbial life that exists within the casts. This microbial life combined with minerals is the powerhouse that drives natural fertility.

You may wish to refer to these web pages for more information on the importance of microbial life in soils: The Soil Food Web or Nutri Tech Solutions .

By adding worm casts to potted plants, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, shrub beds or under trees, the natural fertility cycle can be kick started. In our modern use of artificial fertilisers we have inadvertantly killed off almost all soil microbial life. Without this all important soil microbial life, plants need artificial fertilisers to keep growing. Plants also lack the natural protection from diseases and pests that a healthy soil environment offers.

So by adding worm casts you can expect to reduce the need for artificial fertilisers, reduce or even eliminate the use of herbicides and pesticides and eliminate almost all of the chemicals frequently used to combat the plethora of diseases that attack our modern plants. Worm casts will even help the soil to retain a greater moisture level, thus reducing the amount of watering needed for your plants.

Our worm casts are currently in the process of having quality accreditation performed on them by the Soil Foodweb Institute. An initial biological assay is available here: Worm cast biology test result

Because our worm casts are so rich, they only need to be added at around 10% to most potting mixes or garden soils. Although plants will grow in 100% worm casts.

Our premium worm casts are currently packaged in calico bags (to let the microbial life breeth) and sealed in cardboard boxes and are sent Australia wide (with the exeption of Tasmania due to quarantine laws) via Australia Post regular mail. Please keep the worm casts moist with an occassional spray of water.

Minimum order quantities are 5kg. We have no maximum order quantities on worm casts.

Please enquire direct with George (e-mail: orders@worms.net.au) for bulk quantities.
